U.S. Firefighter Disorientation Study
authored by - William R. Mora
San Antonio Fire Department, Texas

William Mora published a study looking into U.S. firefighter disorientation.  The paper looks at 17 cases where disorientation lead to firefighter fatalities between 1979 and 2001.  The findings can educate every firefighter who must size-up a structure and execute entry for rescue and or mitigation.  We found the document very informative and recommend it to every firefighter reading this right now.

If we are to reduce the number of injuries and line-of-duty deaths relating to firefighting, we must take a better look at the total fireground picture, and not just focus on the fire.  A reliance on tunnel vision may cause us to overlook important signals that could change our approach to the incident, and result in a less-than-desirable outcome.  This podcast is based exclusively on the Courage To Be Safe Drill #4 Offensive versus Defensive tactics.

Learning To Speak The ICS Language ---

2We understand the concept, value and need for the use of Incident Command.  Most see the value in incorporating NIMS into the process as well.  If we participated in a basic ICS and/or NIMS program we could recite the key positions and basic functions fairly accurately.  The difference between the basics and mastery is demonstrated when we are in the middle of a significant event requiring mutual aid from surrounding communities and local, state or federal agencies.  When that happens we must know and fluently speak the ICS language. If we become fluent in the ICS language (Terms and Definitions) we could operate within the ICS/NIMS environment with professional understanding and execution So .. It is time to learn the language --
