It it very hard to consider removing the words in the banner above. How often are you accidentally successful. Over this
past year I have traveled to many organizations and listened to many stories of firefighter actions that are often thought of as courageous acts. Near miss after near miss. What do we take away from these events? We were lucky. In most cases they are stories around the table or in the TV room. As I hear some of them I look quickly into the eyes of those listening to see if I can gauge
a thought that might be silently running through their minds. How many are silently saying to themselves things like "were were lucky no one was killed" or it was not courage but a very dangerous and risky maneuver.
Courage is risky, if you challenge safety you are indicating that those who are being challenged are not doing things for the best interest of the team. You are asking that they change the way they do business. But challenges to safety may be just what is needed for others and for organizations to face issues it would rather dismiss as their way of doing business. So many great changes have taken place in our business in the last decade it is a very exciting time to be in the fire service. It's the pockets of resistance's that still need to be reformed that can complete the picture when changing our traditional cultures from old to new and more modern attitudes and actions of safety.
At FDIC this year I was intrigued by Bobby Haltons opening address. Please take a few moments and hear it for yourself.

This is on of the best presentations on the internet today. Many of you know that I am dedicated to developing, delivering and training others to become outstanding speakers and teachers.
Guy is an outstanding example of a commander of his stage and provides ideas and opinions that can easily be associated with what you do if you influence others.
Take the time to watch him work and learn from him. Each of us has to create our own unique style but his thoughts may just bring you to a new level. |

What
did you know?
National Grid Electrical Safety Series
The
series presented on our network was viewed
by a large audience. But I have to ask
the question "What did you learn?".
PSEN wants to provide an opportunity
to self evaluate just that. This month
we have developed a series of short review
questions for you.
How
about giving them a try. If you do well then you will
be better prepared to handle electrical emergences. If
not you can always review them again. Let's Begin

Special Report - SCBA Facepiece Degradation
We extend special thanks to the MA. Department of Fire Service for sharing the following special presentation with the fire service.
The fire academy is seeing in increase in SCBA polycarbonite facepieces being severely damaged by firefighters going deeper/staying longer in fire/excessive heat environments. The risk of serious injury or fatalities prompted this short safety clip with the expectation that firefighters will recognize the potential danger and modify their actions.
