Driving apparatus is much more than a right of passage. Firefighters learning to drive apparatus have little understanding of the power and potential hazards that they are in command of when driving on the streets within their community.
PSEN has spent the last decade delivering driver training to firefighters. Some believe that driving the over the road training course is the primary factor in creating driving excellence. Driver excellence begins with the driver in command of the vehicle. What he/she knows about the apparatus, what they know about vehicle dynamics, what they understand about technologies onboard and what reaction can they expect for every action that takes place.
Thanks - Anti-lock Brake Education Alliance
Many new drivers know what ABS stands for but do not fully understand the functionality of the system. The material presented in this click-and-read compressed burst learning clip provides some valuable information about ABS. It will benefit you driving your personal vehicle as well as emergency apparatus. Knowing that your vehicle is equipped with ABS is simply not enough. How they work, how to engage them and what to expect are the key to using this type of braking technology.
Driving Skills For Life - Presented by Ford Motor Company
Driving Skills for Life is a national safety initiative aimed at teenagers who have earned or are about to earn a driver’s license. The program was developed by a panel of safety experts brought together by Ford Motor Company and the Governors Highway Safety Association to teach students the skills necessary for safe driving beyond what they learn in standard driver’s education programs. While buckling up and driving sober are fundamental rules that drivers need to follow, this program goes a step further and focuses on four key driving skills: Hazard Recognition, Vehicle Handling, Space Management and Speed Management. The result is a unique program that teaches teens these skills, which could prevent more than 60% of teen vehicle crashes.
If you experienced a tire blowout would you know what to do?
One scenario that many drivers dread is the rapid loss of air in a tire. Emergency vehicles are heavy and depending on its center of gravity, speed of the vehicle, road and weather conditions a tire blowout can significantly alter the handling characteristics of your vehicle. What would you do?
There are so many elements to good driver training that we offer a complete basic awareness program. We are just completing our updates for 2007 and one component is more training that involves the skill of using your peripheral vision to read the roadway environment. Driving instructors need to teach this skill and ask student drivers to make the connection between natural ability and a learning one. As a teacher when you see a situation approaching while driver training in the non-emergency mode, pull over, stop and solicit the student drivers visual perception of the approaching area. Determine his/her belief and misconception about their perspective. Your experience may redirect that belief and possible misconception into a consequence with a good outcome rather than a bad outcome.
This short segment is just a single piece of the complete driver training basic awareness program. We hope you find value in it. Feel free to drop a note for more information about bringing PSEN to your community to deliver the complete package.

Seat Belts Save Lives / Heaven can Wait Message from US Naval Safety Center
We all understand how difficult it can be to require vehicle operators and crews to use safety belts. Whether driving your car or driving emergency apparatus this clip may change you.
You may have heard the saying "Less is More". Here is what it means to us. It means compressed burst learning clips that are direct, clear, timely and to the point relative to driving and driver attitude modification. We do not need to over present the subject we simply want to provide you (as the saying goes) food for thought. These three driver awareness clips are examples.
