Anti-Lock Brake Systems & What you should know

absWe found this learning burst in the media archives of the Department of Transportation.  It is slightly dated but the information is as interesting today as it was when it was originally produced.  Every driver should review this clip on Anti-Lock Brake Systems.

ABS Brake Systems - Questions & Answers

If you experienced a tire blowout would you know what to do?

flatOne scenario that many drivers dread is the rapid loss of air in a tire.  Emergency vehicles are heavy and depending on its center of gravity, speed of the vehicle, road and weather conditions a tire blowout can significantly alter the handling characteristics of your vehicle.   What would you do?

RoadwayTeaching Drivers Situational Awareness

There are so many elements to good driver training that we offer a complete basic awareness program.  We are just completing our updates for 2007 and one component is more training that involves the skill of using your peripheral vision to read the roadway environment.  Driving instructors need to teach this skill and ask student drivers to make the connection between natural ability and a learning one.  As a teacher when you see a situation approaching while driver training in the non-emergency mode, pull over, stop and solicit the student drivers visual perception of the approaching area.   Determine his/her belief and misconception about their perspective.   Your experience may redirect that belief and possible misconception into a consequence with a good outcome rather than a bad outcome.

This short segment is just a single piece of the complete driver training basic awareness program.  We hope you find value in it. Feel free to drop a note for more information about bringing PSEN to your community to deliver the complete package.

Air Brake Spring Release Test

brakesThe air brake system provides reliability with apparatus braking. Like all equipment you should consider a regular check of the air brake spring release mechanism, how to test it, what to expect and did it work as the manufacturer recommends.  In most states commercial drivers license study guides outline how similar systems should work.  Check you CDL manual.    This clip will refresh your memory..

absMany new drivers know what ABS stands for but do not fully understand the functionality of the system. The material presented in thisclick-and-read compressed burst learning clip provides some valuable information about ABS.  It will benefit you driving your personal vehicle as well as emergency apparatus.  Knowing that your vehicle is equipped with ABS is simply not enough. How they work, how to engage them and what to expect are the key to using this type of braking technology.

Here is another Reason we should be wearing seat safety harnesses . Volvo had provided this clip demonstrating just what happens when the vehicle rolls-over. The belted driver was seriously hurt as the unbelted right seat occupant was ejected from the vehicle. If you wear your seat belt in the family vehicle why would you go unbelted in the emergency vehicle?
