STOP - False SCBA Alarm Activations
It happens often. Fire ground littered with SCBA's dropped during rehab, crew changes and alarm activations. Watch most news stories from the fire scene and hear the alarm activation in the background. One day these false activation will drown out the alarm of a firefighter in serious trouble. This is becoming a trend and it can take time to locate activated units and turn them off. We are going to dismiss a real activation for just another annoyance alarm.

Compressed Burst Refresher Tip .. Rehab & Firefighters
In the last few weeks we were able to take a bit of footage of a four alarm mid-afternoon fire in Chelsea, MA. The temperature was in the low to mid-nineties. The fireground structured and controlled. The importance of rehab was obvious. EMS / Rehab sector was very close by and upwind of the fire. In addition the Massachusetts Public Safety Rehab Vehicle was quickly on the scene and provided additional services in order reduce any chance of heat related injuries.

Firefighter Forcible Entry for Specialty Window Systems
Forcible Entry Tutorial - A GSA Program
This is an outstanding program for firefighters in every state and every community. Our ability to improve life safety while battling fires increases proportionally when our cognitive knowledge is as current as the technology being designed into many of today’s buildings. We would like to thank the General Services Administration (GSA) for making such a great program available to all firefighters across the country.

SCBA Life Safety Light Sequence -- Scott Heads Up Display
Last month we provided a simple quiz evaluating your knowledge of the heads up display in the Scott 4.5. Many took it and the results indicate that we need to look at this simple but valuable clip that answers the question -- What is the light sequence telling us?
If you are not concerned because your vibralert has been reliable in the past then you are missing the opportunity to make better decisions relative when it comes to decision making in a hazardous environment. Breathing rates can very from day to day, seasonal changes and physical changes. Once you might have gotten 25 minutes from a 30 minute bottle but today maybe its down to 15 minutes. As hazards change so does your adrenalin. With that so does your breathing rate. The visual light sequences identifies that earlier than the vibralert which allows you to have better information to decide your next few steps. Memorize these today.

What are the odds it will happen again?

Is it possible that we are not seriously or fatality injured more often because we are LUCKY. Maybe you prepare more than others and can say that it is preparation that keeps you safe. Is that true in most cases? Let me ask you this. When was the last time you talked with your group about the dangers of hydraulic components in vehicles becoming explosive projectiles when exposed to excessive heat? When was the last time you assessed your ability to extricate victims using updated methods designed to significantly reduce accidental deployment of airbags or to avoid becoming injured due to projectiles while working at the scene?
Dayton Ohio
It is true that it happened a number of years ago. But it happened. Length of time between one event and the next should not lull us into a false sense of security.

Review Standards ... Avoid Accidents .... Improve FF Safety
Live burning in acquired buildings is not new. In most cases it is the only method available to urban organizations and when all of the standards outlined in NFPA 1403 are incorporated the training outcome is positive. This compressed burst learning clip outlines NFPA1403 in part and the background training clip demonstrates an outcome that makes for a table top discussion before your next live burn.

SEASONAL "HAV" REVIEW This is a seasonal review being shown on request. It is such a valuable piece of equipment, the HAV. When was the last time you conducted regular preventative maintenance on the valve. Does the internal valve move in the appropriate direction when you place the transfer handle in the D/B or A/C position? Can you remember which way to move the handle in order to pump the hydrant rather than shutting it off accidentally?. That is why it's time for this first seasonal HAV Review. //////

PSEN Seasonal Review - Slow Death by Carbon Monoxide
With MGL 527 in place the regulation and law changes in Massachusetts there could be a significant increase in carbon monoxide calls. That means we must improve our knowledge on the nature of CO. We must make sure we understand how to use our metering device. What are its limits and how do we calibrate it. What readings will prompt a second meter to verify use of SCBA and/or call the utility company. What are parts per million and how much is to much.

Intake Pressure & Discharge Pressure
At a recent fire requiring multiple pumps and lines we had to deal with water supply and discharge questions. Could we supply more companies with water with the residual pressure being displayed on our gauges? If not what would we need to do in order to solve that challenge? Should it come from a hydrant on the street or a hydrant from a different water main. As an engineer you will not be able to answer those questions if you are not sure what the pump panel is telling you. So lets start right there ... Intake versus Discharge, Basics 101
Our pump had three lines working from a 60 pound hydrant. We had three lines working and 15 PSI residual. A young officer asked us to supply a ladder pipe. The young engineer thought it could be done but when he attempted the operations the pump went negative pressure and cavitation

Hidden Danger: Oxygen Regulator Fires
Hidden Dangers: Oxygen Regulator Fires produced in cooperation with CDC, NIOSH, NASA and CDRH, is an informational video that acquaints users of oxygen equipment to the possible dangers of explosion and fire. The target audience of EMS personnel, firefighters, home health care professionals, hospital workers, assisted living caregivers, police officers and others who use high pressure oxygen equipment are taught how to properly care for, check out and use oxygen tanks, regulators and related equipment.

Resetting A Master Box
Thanks to the town of Concord MA for helping us produce this short learning burst on resetting a master box.
As some point we must learn to reset a street box or a master box. Seems simple but there is a systematic and appropriate approach to take. This short learning burst will remind us of those steps.

This clip is a profound example of what not to do when responding to an incident. Watch it and decide if what you see is appropriate.
