When was the Last Time you Drafted?

As a pump operator working in a community that has a municipal water supply, rarely do I think about "drafting". We have a coastal waterway but no ramp to get close to the waters edge. More than likely if a municipal water supply is disrupted I would expect to see tanker's and portable water tank's. It is a good time to think about "DRAFTING"?
Thank you to the Sherborn, MA Fire Department for allowing PSEN to develop compressed burst learning segment's revolving around the basics of "drafting".

OSHA Publication - Chapter 4 Standpipe Systems
Standpipe systems are just another feature that we know exist in high rise buildings. What we need to consider is a seasonal process to review what they are and some of the fire service features that can assist in fighting a fire in a high rise building. This comes from a OSHA publication entitled: Fire Service Features of Buildings and Fire Protection Systems.
Watch this short initial refresher presentation. Download the publication, reproduce copies for your crew and review Chapter 4 as a table top training session.

Intake Pressure & Discharge Pressure
At a recent fire requiring multiple pumps and lines we had to deal with water supply and discharge questions. Could we supply more companies with water with the residual pressure being displayed on our gauges? If not what would we need to do in order to solve that challenge? Should it come from a hydrant on the street or a hydrant from a different water main. As an engineer you will not be able to answer those questions if you are not sure what the pump panel is telling you. So lets start right there ... Intake versus Discharge, Basics 101
Our pump had three lines working from a 60 pound hydrant. We had three lines working and 15 PSI residual. A young officer asked us to supply a ladder pipe. The young engineer thought it could be done but when he attempted the operations the pump went negative pressure and cavitation

SEASONAL "HAV" REVIEW This is a seasonal review being shown on request. It is such a valuable piece of equipment, the HAV. When was the last time you conducted regular preventative maintenance on the valve. Does the internal valve move in the appropriate direction when you place the transfer handle in the D/B or A/C position? Can you remember which way to move the handle in order to pump the hydrant rather than shutting it off accidentally?. That is why it's time for this first seasonal HAV Review.
